JACKSONVILLE – Piggly Wiggly recently joined forces with the Fisher House on Camp Lejeune to raise funds and awareness of the needs of wounded military and their families. Fisher Houses, a network of comfort houses built on military bases and hospitals, enable the family of wounded service members to be close to their loved ones during hospitalization for a combat injury, illness or disease. To date, the Fisher House Foundation, which operates 61 houses, has offered 4.7 million days of lodging and saved families more than $200 million in lodging, food and transportation costs.
On July 13, Piggly Wiggly on Henderson Road in Jacksonville hosted a fundraising event for the Fisher House with numerous companies on hand taking donations and serving food to event patrons. Participating companies included Carolina Packers, Porky’s Place BBQ Sauce, General Mills, Stephens Winery, Kretchmar meats and Baldies Sauces.
The Got to Be NC Big Cart was also on site to “fill the Big Cart” with a number of items that families visiting the Fisher House at Camp Lejeune regularly need. Items collected ranged from toiletries and paper goods to non-perishable food and personal items. Event organizer Tommy Pittman, director of produce with Piggly Wiggly Retail North Carolina, was pleased with the turnout and support.
“Saturday’s event was very successful and raised more than $4,500 in donations,” Pittman said. “It will help the Fisher House tremendously to have these items and monetary donations available for the families. Piggly Wiggly is very excited to have so many people in the community help our service men and women, and I would like to thank everyone that came out in support.”
Piggly Wiggly will continue its efforts to raise funds and awareness for the Fisher House this week. The week will culminate with a concert featuring country music artist Chris Cagle at Marine Chevrolet in Jacksonville on Sunday, July 21. Tickets for the event start at $10 and are available at participating Piggly Wiggly stores, Marine Chevrolet and through eTix.
“We hope more people will continue to donate over the next week,” Pittman said. “All 32 original Piggly Wiggly stores will continue to collect donations, and will also have tickets available to the Chris Cagle concert on Sunday.”
