10-room Fisher House Will Provide Free, Temporary Lodging to Military Families
Pittsburgh, PA [December 4, 2012] – VA Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management Mr. William Schoenhard and VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System Director Terry Gerigk Wolf joined Fisher House Foundation Chairman and CEO Ken Fisher here today to dedicate the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System Fisher House, the first in the state, bringing the number of Fisher Houses serving military families worldwide to 58.
“Our VA Medical Centers provide ongoing, essential care for Veterans from every conflict and every line of service,” said Mr. Fisher. “Whether a younger Veteran returning from overseas deployment or a Vietnam Veteran receiving care for a more advanced health issue, our Fisher Houses work in concert with the VA to provide the care and comfort our military families are entitled to.”
The 10-room, 9,500 sq.-ft. “comfort home” will join the network of Fisher Houses operating in the United States and Germany, and was gifted to the VA as part of the ceremony. Each bedroom suite comes equipped with a private, handicapped-accessible bathroom. Common areas include a well-appointed community kitchen, large communal living, dining and family rooms, and patio.
"Thanks to Fisher House, Veterans who travel from across the country to put their health in our hands will find it even easier to access VA Pittsburgh’s world-class medical teams and innovative care options,” said Terry Gerigk Wolf, Director and CEO, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. “Even more, their loved ones will be able to cheer them on every step of the way. Mixing our cutting-edge care with the undeniable comforts of home is an extremely compassionate—and powerful—recipe for healing."
Construction of this Fisher House was supported by the Department of Pennsylvania American Legion; Highmark Inc.; Alcoa Foundation; Bill O’Reilly and ‘The Factor’ viewers; the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund; Masco Corporation; and Newman’s Own Foundation.
About Fisher House
Fisher House Foundation is best known for the network of comfort homes built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. The Fisher Houses are 5,000 to 16,800 square-foot homes, donated to the military and Department of Veterans Affairs, where families can stay while a loved one is receiving treatment. Additionally, the Foundation ensures that families of service men and women wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan are not burdened with unnecessary expense during a time of crisis.
Located in close proximity to the medical center or hospital it serves, each Fisher House consists of between 8 and 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and an inviting living room with a library and toys for children. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is no fee to stay in a Fisher House. Since inception, the program has saved military and veteran families an estimated $192 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.
Fisher House Foundation operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.
