NEW YORK - Eight original portraits of "Doonesbury" characters sold for a combined $3,503 in an 11-day eBay auction that ended Saturday.
Cartoonist Garry Trudeau donated the signed and framed portraits to Fisher House, which provides temporary homes for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and veterans' hospitals (E&P Online, Nov. 8).
A drawing of Uncle Duke sold for the highest price -- $810. Tied for second at $510 was a portrait of B.D., the injured Iraq veteran who starred in "The Long Road Home" comic collection (Andrews McMeel Publishing, 2005) that also benefited Fisher House.
"Doonesbury" is distributed to more than 1,400 newspapers by Universal Press Syndicate.
Added by Fisher House Foundation: Two additional "Doonesbury" portraits, donated by Garry Trudeau, were sold to the highest bidders on WMAL (AM 630) Radio in Washington, D. C. on December 19, 2005, for $5,500 and $5,000 respectively, bringing the total donation to Fisher House Foundation for the sale of the ten prints to $14,003.
