EGLIN AFB - Runners won't have to eat squirrels or ford the Yellow River to complete the second annual Swamp Ranger Run on May 10.
But they can expect a tough trail and plenty of competition at the 5k/10k event at Camp James E. Rudder.
"Both are trail runs over varying terrain. ...It's not an unreasonable course," said Army Capt. Mike Erlandson of the 6th Ranger Training Battalion.
Sand and low-grade hills are among the course's characteristics. Aid stations will be spaced intermittently along the course.
Erlandson said about 255 runners entered last year's inaugural race.
The Swamp Ranger Association, which is co-hosting the run with Northwest Florida Track Club, and the 6th battalion hope to draw 300 competitors this year.
The race's pre-registration fee is $20. Pre-registration runs through May 1 by mail and May 7 online. Registration on race day will be $25.
Proceeds will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation, which is building one of its "comfort homes" across from Eglin Regional Hospital at Eglin Air Force Base.
